AI Policy

Overview

At RMS Titanic Inc., we are committed to using artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly and ethically in support of our educational mission and stewardship role. When enhancing digitized and restored images we may use AI tools to improve visual clarity and optimize image quality. However, the following principles guide our use of AI in image enhancement:

  1. No AI Alteration of People: We do not use AI to alter, enhance, or generate features in images of people. This includes facial reconstruction, smoothing, or reanimation. Preserving the dignity and authenticity of individuals is paramount.
  2. Respect for Historical Integrity: All enhancements must retain the historical accuracy and context of the original image. We do not use AI to add, remove, or imagine elements that were not present in the source material. If we generate new images inspired by historical subjects—especially those not based on a specific source image—we ensure they are clearly labeled as interpretive and never presented as original or archival.
  3. Ethical and Privacy Considerations: We aim to present images in a respectful and responsible manner. When working with photographs that include identifiable individuals, especially in historical contexts, we carefully consider privacy, cultural sensitivity, and ethical implications.
  4. Review and Oversight: All enhanced images undergo internal review to ensure they meet our ethical, educational, and historical standards before publication or public use.

By adhering to these principles, we aim to harness the benefits of AI technology while upholding the trust of our audiences and the integrity of the historical record.
